Dave Maric

Dave Maric was born in Bedford, England in 1970 to immigrant parents from Greece and Bosnia.

Although he studied classical piano from an early age, it was popular music, jazz and electronic music that were to become for many years dominating influences over his performing and (self taught) composing.
However, soon after moving to London in 1988, he rapidly entered the world of contemporary classical music through joining the Steve Martland Band as pianist. This led also to many other performance opportunities with various London based ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta, London Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Meanwhile, Maric was also involved with many London based jazz groups and education projects exploring jazz, contemporary classical composition, and the use of computer technology in music.

Maric's experience as a performer was the primary inspiration for his experimentation with medium to large scale composing from the mid 1990s onwards. However, explorations in jazz, Latin American music, improvisation and popular music remained as themes in tandem with this, eventually leading to Maric's first ever commissioned work: Trilogy for live percussion and CD (commissioned by percussionist Colin Currie in 2000), which seeks a successful convergence within all these disparate styles.
The immediate and continued success of this work led the Lucerne Festival to commission Maric for a new work for Currie - Sense & Innocence. This was premiered at the festival in September 2002.
Trilogy also alerted pianist Katia Labèque to Maric´s compositions, and since February 2001 he has been working with her on a group project - the Katia Labèque Band (with drummer Marque Gilmore) - and is featured as the composer, arranger, and keyboardist. A highly successful European tour took place in July 2001 alongside pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and the band's debut album recording - Unspoken - was released in late 2003 on the new label Unspeakable Records (which was formed by Maric and Labèque).

Maric's list of works include Falling to the Sky (commissioned by Viktoria Mullova and Katia Labèque - featured as part of the programme for their highly acclaimed recital tours throughout Europe during 2002 and 2004), Broken Fiction (for the multi-influenced quintet Between the Notes - choreographed by Cathy Marston for performances at the Royal Opera House 2 in October 2003), Exile (commissioned by Katia and Marielle Labèque and premiered in October 2002 at the Birmingham Symphony Hall), Borrowed Time, a commission from Westminster Abbey that was premiered there in June 2003, and Spellbound, Maric's first ever work involving full orchestra (commissioned by Radio France and l'Orchestre National de Montpellier).

Currently Maric is working on various projects including the completion of his debut album recording, touring with the Labèque Band, and new commissions (including a new work for Viktoria Mullova).

“It’s no coincidence that London’s most compelling fusion outfits TALVIN SINGH,
PROJECT 23, DNA, NITIN SAWHNEY and STATE OF BENGAL, all feature Gilmore as anchorman. Ignore the lame fusion cack put together by the likes of Mo’Wax,
GILMORE BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY. We’ll only realize how important he is in years to come.”
